You Don't Love Me Yet, paperback

Paperback design by Rodrigo Corral

Phone messages play a large part in Lethem's novel, and in less talented hands this would a boring, stock-driven mess. But Rodrigo Corral doesn't exactly have less talented hands, does he? It jumps off the new books table; go find it if you don't believe me. Buy this book from Amazon.com

2007's hardcover, which I like even less now:

    Looks like rodrigo one-up'd Kid.

I saw that book the other day and it did strike me. But I did not pick it up because it sort of pissed me off. I don't know how many times I have tried to pitch a sideways title to a publisher and they knocked it down.

It is a really pleasant and attractive treatment he has overlaid on the image...

Curious about the phone itself. It is practically a relic of the old land line technology. For such a personal message, I wonder if a cell phone wouldnt be more appropriate. Possibly that would date it too much, as phone technology changes pretty quick: the phone they chose is almost timeless at this point. Possibly it relates to the timing of the narrative.

I guess I have to read it and find out. Always a pleasure with Letham books!
