A Case of Exploding Mangoes, US and UK editions

Designer info to come

A farce about the death of Pakistani dictator General Zia which, according to some conspiracy theorists, was actually an assassination that may have involved a crow drunk on overripe mangoes. The US edition (top) is mighty literal, and I'm almost never a fan of that traditional military stenciling, regardless of the book it adorns. The UK cover includes the crow to nice effect, but the stylistically different second crow and the jets seem unnecessary. Buy this book from Amazon.com

  1. Chip Kidd did the US edition.

both have their merits. The illustration of the crow is charming.

I could not agree more about the stencil type.

What an odd topic—no wonder Chip Kidd jumped on this one. His solution is good and to the point. Not sure what else it needs to win me over, but there seems to be a sort of quick wit that maybe is too obvious. To quick. It grabs your attention immediately. What is that?? Oh, a mango about to explode. The bird comes of as cliché and to gentle—no impact.

I prefer the US one, also. It makes me want to read the book.

Do american editors never get tired of being pounded by ther british colleages?

The american cover is so cheesy and outdated it really looks like something from the time my father was in college.

The US cover looks like it was done real fast by someone that won't get paid enough or doesn't do book covers. Too literal and too easy to execute. True, not all works can be masterpieces but this particular one is a study in cliches.

  8. The American cover is so literal and lacks imagination. I like the British cover. The Indian and Pakistani version has Zia ul Haq on the cover, i guess it is done to irritate us all into buying the book and removing the jacket so that we do not get to see his face again.
