Scratching at Cardboard: Poetry & Short Stories Selected as the Best of the Whittaker Prize 2008

Design by Five Seventeen

Editor Donna Gagnon Pugh sent this in, and I asked designer Five Seventeen if he could say a little bit about his design:

"The design was done by hand and scanned. I did a bit of additional touch-up to some of the shadows, but very minor. It's such a long and convoluted title, I wanted to control how it was being read...The design is partially based on a German Expressionist advertisement..."

I can't think of a more perfect color to use on the spine than that pink. My only complaint: you know those HUGE books for kids, the ones that are 3 feet tall? I want this to be that big. Buy the smaller but still very cool one here.

  2. great idea, but i think it's a bit too hard to read. maybe the book itself is actually easier...

  6. I'm at odds over this cover. A part of me likes it, but the other side wonders how many people will be able to read it, never mind get what is being done.

i get what is being done, but is annoys me... it is too noisy/crowded for the likes of me.

I agree that it's quite inventive, but I hope it's more readable in person.

  9. An eye catching book cover is the key to getting someone to pick up your newly published book. Look at the cover, turn it over and read the back and then you might buy it. Good book cover designs are hard to come by. I should know.
