American Nerd

Design by Jason J. Heuer

A "cultural-history-slash-memoir" of the nerd, with a wonderfully appropriate social sciences aesthetic. I've not seen this is person yet, so I can't tell you what the labels on the frames say or if the design continues on the back; I'm guessing it does based on the images at http://americannerdbook.com.

This has got to be a Paul Sahre design, no? UPDATE: It's not.

Buy this book from Amazon.com

PS: I knew there was another book on nerds published recently. From late 2007, something much more predictable:

  2. this whole frame thing has been done a million times. Not original...

and a dozen others i have seen throughout my life.

But it is a fun idea and pleasant to look at. Good work either way...

I think most ideas have been done "at least" a dozen times before. This is executed well.

  4. Yes. This is, but it is very familiar to look at as well.

  5. On a side note, I just returned form the BEA in LA and found that the notion of "I think most ideas have been done "at least" a dozen times before." is very very true. And I thought I was being clever with my work this year—geez—every other thing looked like something I tried...

I like the cover, but I was bothered that one of the frame labels was wrong. It depicts a collection of role-playing game dice, but the label reads "die." Not sure if the designer incorrectly illustrated a given piece of text or a copy editor slipped up, but there you are.

Noticing this, of course, makes me hopelessly nerdy.

Jason has gotten some great work in 50 books 50 covers. The cover I noticed today was "Some Fun: Stories and Novella".

  8. I love that, what i believe is the beginning of the book or just a really long subtitle, runs off the page. balances the frames beautifully

The website for this nerd book is not nearly nerdy enough. If you're going to go nerd, you must go nerd.

I mean, who wants to be a wannabe nerd?

As covers go, I would have loved to have seen a room full of nerds at the Nerd Museum looking at the nerdery on the walls [which is what this cover implies]. This comp goes only halfway to brilliance, leaves me hanging.
