Maybe it not the sun, but the moon, and those other bits floating around "a novel" are supposed to represent the moon's craters, though it looks like cheese to me.
try reading this book whilst travelling, and it rings bells. one of the most incredible books i,ve ever read, full of meaning on every single page.
