I think it COULD be brilliant. But falls short due to "not quite there" execution. The type needs some tweaking and I would add effect of making it look like it was a laminated cover (as they would have done in the 70s) and that laminate has now cracked and started to pull up. Just my humble opinion...
What would you do w/ the type? I think I would make it rougher and look more hand-lettered.
The dog head is also a bit off centre (in relation to the body) and that really bothers me.
It's *way* off-center, and clearly intentional, I think.
What would I do with the type? I think I would make the title have that hand-drawn 3D popout look like they did in the 70s on album covers. Rougher and hand-lettered like Joseph says. Author name and "a novel" should be in something less stylized I think...
