Thought you'd like to know that I bought this book -- retail price -- and am reading it now. And all because I saw it here and loved the cover. Btw, the cover has embossed "rivets." Nice touch :~)
sorry to be leaving comments on posts so long ago but i just found your blog and have spent my afternoon going through it.
as far as this cover is concerned, i think the type is over the chrysler building, and that the foreground construction is actually the empire state building (that is rising as it's being constructed).

My first interpretation of the letterforms was that it was suggestive of steel girders being hoisted up ... which also works, I think
