Hokum

Well, this should spur some debate. Would you feel comfortable designing this? Under what circumstances?

I saw the picture and smiled ... until I read the caption below.

Too bad "hokum" isn't spelled "hokom".

A cover like this isn't made by accident (or, I hope not). This one had me running for the amazon.com description for some clues.

From what I can tell, it's intended to unsettle, agitate and offend and is reflective of the book's edgy content (kind of like that "Boondocks" show on Cartoon Network of which I am secretly a fan).

However, I would not want to submit this as a solution, even if it is appropriate. Does that make me a coward? Uh ... maybe. Yeah. Criinge.

Check out James Victore's poster on Racism and the Death Penalty. Now that took guts. But in that particular case, skating on the edge of offensiveness totally paid off. I don't know if it's as worthwhile to do so in this case ... just my $0.02

My main complaint is that the watermelon looks unapetizing. The edges are bruised. I mean, if you're going to go out on a limb and do something edgy, at least have a pretty melon.

I think it could work if it was done in the right way with suitable bite, so to speak.

Come to think of it ... I agree, that is the wrong slice of the melon to read as a good-humored smile. That bump in the center in particular changes it into something ghoulish ... ? Or is that just me
