Your guess is as good as mine...

Why would someone okay this cover?

This is slightly less effective than those "No image available" holders on amazon.com

(zing! oh yeah)

Here's how the book is described (in part) on the Random House site:

"What uncanniness provoked Michael Jackson to become “Alone of All His Race, Alone of All Her Sex,” while establishing himself as an undeniably great performer with neo-Gothic, dandy proclivities and a producer of visionary music videos? What do we find so unnerving about Michael Jackson’s presumed monstrosity? In short, how are we all of us implicated?"

It's clearly being positioned as a work of cultural criticism and I'm guessing it looks the way it does to distinguish it from anything remotely "tabloid-y".

Without having seen this book in person, I will guess that the type is printed with a metallic ink.

Does that improve the cover? In my opinion ... a bit, maybe ... but not enough

The cover is a disaster, not only from an artistic POV, but the title prompts me to think of all sorts of nasty jokes/puns. And to think someone earned actual $$ to come up with this >:O
