American Ally

It's the picture that makes this cover worth talking about. Why *this* image? Why a photo from behind? Obviously the word "Ally" in the title is accentuated by the photo; Bush has his arm around Blair's shoulder, and it looks like he's guiding him -- or even consoling him. Is there something about this photo -- as opposed to one shot from the front -- that makes the substance/subject of this book harder to judge?

It gives me a clear message that they are conspiring and hiding what their real relationship is.

Plus, I'm very tired of political books with photos face-out (and bad ones from Getty to boot). We're overdue for a different look, and one that shows the context and nuances of the subject matter.

This is an intriguing image indeed, and I think the unconventional shot from behind loads the cover with multiple meanings. In addition to the two possible interpretations you propose (guidance, consolation) there's the obvious: the backslapping buddy.

It's a very "now" image ... whether the photo will be as recognizable to consumers in five years is debatable. I guess it depends partly on how world events unfold ...

Dunno. But the photo does convey to me a sense of confidence between the two leaders.
