Let's Play the "No Title on the Cover" Game

Design by Rodrigo Corral, illustration by Jacob Magraw-Mickelson

UPDATE: The circle is a cut; the "R" peeking through is on the book itself, as is the word "RANT."

This novel was released on May 1:

Here's a description from Amazon:

A high school rebel who always wins (and a childhood murderer?), Rant Casey escapes from his small hometown of Middleton for the big city. He becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing. On appointed nights participants recognize one another by such designated car markings as “Just Married” toothpaste graffiti and then stalk and crash into each other. Rant Casey will die a spectacular highway death, after which his friends gather testimony needed to build an oral history of his short, violent life. Their collected anecdotes explore the possibility that his saliva caused a silent urban plague of rabies and that he found a way to escape the prison house of linear time."

So: who wrote this? (No running to the bookstore to look at the spine, you.)

I'm not a fan of the cover or the premise, and the main character is a sociopath, so I have to guess it's Chuck Palhdaelkjhlkhgik.

We have a winner.

See, fiction, I told you! That guy must have a fetish for type-less covers; Lullaby was like that

Rant. Chuck Palahniuk.

Although this isn't necessarily my taste, I (begrudgingly) liked this cover from the moment I first picked it up in a bookstore.

I know I recently laid down the ironclad statement that breaking convention must have a rationale (in the "typeless cover" blog,) but dammit they managed to push ALL of the cover and back info including the title onto the flaps!!!! (...with the unitrusive exception of the author's name on the spine.)

Oh well. Cool, reasoned designer aside... I'm just a man. Gotta respect it when you see a fellow designer win big battles, let alone so many in one design.

But seriously, for something that has all the (potentially dangerous) bells and whistles---die cut, gold foil embossing, typelessness, title on flaps(!)---the final product does strike a nice balance, and despite the imagery and author association even seems... delicate?
