The Archivist's Story

Design by Roberto de Vicq De Cumptich

From the Publishers Weekly synopsis: "...(this) tracks the plight of disgraced literature teacher and reluctant archivist Pavel Dubrov, whose job, mainly, in 1939 Moscow, is to destroy books at Lubyanka prison, a dank, morbid depository for political prisoners where the boilers rarely work."

I never get sick of Constructivist references, especially when they're done exceptionally well, as we see here.

Nice, but I think the yellow star stops the movement.

why does every US fiction cover have to say 'a novel' on it?

A perfect matching of photo to graphic. And I really like that the type is just skewed text boxes. Having the type move backwards in space (with perspective) would have been too much. The design is deceptively straight forward in that way; In fact, it's full of really nice, subtle choices...

Got an ARC and I can honestly say, the books pretty damn good, too!

A nice constructavist treatment for the topic of the book. It's funny how this becomes a literal application of the style instead of a conceptual one in terms of the art movement style used. Mainly it is a clean, knowledgeble execution of the style and works accurately for the content.

The yellow star ads a needed bit of info related to the region (I thinks). As for the words "A Novel" on the cover. Well, most of us are dumb and assume everything is just not a novel. I'm kidding, who cares—it's always a pleasure to see it there and know without a doubt: This is a fucking Novel!

You know, this whole thing with designers constantly swearing is real tiring. I mean really, anytime we go to a design conference or AIGA that seems to be the form of communication that evokes hip and coolness. OK 'nuf rantng I'm going back to my studio that smells like moth balls to design doilies and Amish furniture logos now.
