The World is Flat, US and UK paperbacks

US design by Henry Sene Yee

There's some information about the paperback design on Henry Sene Yee's blog, and some images of rejected comps. (Scroll down a bit, as the images are spread out among several posts). The final US version is below; it's glossy and the title type is embossed:

The UK cover is terrible. What happened?

these are pretty ugly.I saw the top one in the bookstore yesterday and could not tell AT ALL that it was an earth made of stick people...

The beveled gold type is just a bummer. I've had clients ask me to do this—many times—and I cry—every time.

Finally, a U.S. cover design that trumps that of the U.K. There may be hope for us yet...

I have seen some internet ads with the little people, maybe marketing wanted some kind of icon or something.

Why do people think that moving back in perspective means flat?

there is just so many ways this cover could have been more engaging.

There's something about the 'L' sinking into what appears to be a river of globalized blood that makes the title look like 'The World is Fat.'

the capital and italisized THE and IS... IS very dIStracting, I read those insignifigant words with TOO much emphasis.
