New and Forthcoming from Picador USA

I subscribe to Henry Sene Yee's RSS feed, and today it turned up this gem (designed by him):

I like JG Ballard very much, and while I haven't read it in quite some time, I'm particularly fond of The Kindness of Women, the sequel to the better-known Empire of the Sun. The book addresses (in his characteristic semi-autobiographical, semi-fictive style) Ballard's life post-Japanese internment camp, his wife's death and his subsequent womanizing. This cover, simply put, just gets it right. (And amateur vexillologists take note: all 16 of the rays on the Japanese Imperial Navy flag are present. I love designers who do their research. Nice job, Mr. Yee.)

As for the two designs below (designer names to come), all I can say is that Picador's got a great Fall catalog. Nicole Caputo designed All for Love, and Phil Pascuzzo designed Death in the Andes.

Its a shame that a review ended up in the middle of the burst.

Yeah, I agree, these are some very engaging, energetic covers. Nice concepts. The hand done, cut and paste and woodcut stuff seems to be coming up again...

This really caught my attention in Henry's feed yesterday, too.

Picador does generally have some great-looking covers but I'm always bothered by the bad paper and printing I often find inside them. Check out the Susan Sontag titles, for one example. It's really disapointing.

Who are the designers?

Shorty: Names have been added to the post. They're great, aren't they?

Wow, these both look really good -- I'll definitely seek out more information about them to see if they might be interesting reads.

I took a second look after reading the first comment here, and I disagree. I think it's a wonderful solution to the necessary jacket blurb. It's so well integrated.
