The Humbling
Design by Milton Glaser

Simply wonderful design by Milton Glaser for Roth's tale of "one of the leading American stage actors of his generation, now in his sixties, (who) has lost his magic, his talent, and his assurance." This aches: there's real sadness and loneliness and no joy here, and the spotlight shining through the stage floor reinforces that it is shining on nothing.
Some info about Glaser's relationship with Roth here, and a shout-out to The Oxen of the Sun blog, where I first saw this cover. (Check out his leather-bound copy of Murakami's After Dark.)

brilliant cover. It is interesting that this cover retains a sort of old-school feel—that is becoming hip again.
Thanks so much for the shout-out! I've been following the BDR for quite a while, and to be honest your blog is what inspired me to get started on my own.
Keep up the amazing work!
May I point out that the spotlight is actually shining on MEHUIPHIRC, which is probably a code of some sort...
sorry.
you've got a typo up there... "Deisgn by Milton Glaser"
Fixed. Thanks!
