At some point I remembered I had previously posted some German and French editions of Kafka on the Shore -- they're here. And running around the Interwebs a few hours ago I found this French cover for After Dark, which clearly has taken a few cues from Chip Kidd's design:
never fancied that (chip) after dark cover to begin with. The attempt at a copy is even worse. The production value on the chip cover is very nice...

ReplyDeleteI've just had a look at the older French and German covers. I'm German and I know the series - no choice of typography and not a lot of choice of placement. Maybe with other colors this could have worked a bit better. Nice crop though!

ReplyDeleteI just love the "after dark" covers; I love how the metallic look has that underground subway look. Gives it that kind of glare-ish feeling after exiting the bar at 2 AM . . .
