Yup, you're right. That is JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye that's been scratched up and written on. And as this book is aimed at young adults, I would say this cover just about hits it out of the park.
If this book is aimed at young adults, they're not going to immediately recognize that cover as Salinger. Everybody I know--I'm 19--either read it at the library or from one of the white/rainbow cornered copies that've been published since 1991.
Otherwise a great cover, though messing with The Catcher in the Rye is jackoffery of the first order.

I totally agree. It's irreverant, on-target, and pretty brilliant. Oh, to get to work on a book like that...
