Off Topic: London 2012 Olympic Logo Released

The most recent version of the London 2012 Olympic logo has been released, in four colors:

Here's a bigger one:

Just a wee bit of a different approach than Chicago's, no? Ah, we Midwesterners are a simple folk :-)

More info on the London design.

UPDATE: The Chicago logo doesn't conform to IOC standards: "On May 16, 2007, Chicago was informed that its logo, a representation of a torch with the flames reminiscent of Chicago's skyline, violated IOC rules against using Olympic torch imagery. In fact the IOC bidding rules prohibit logos containing the Olympic symbol, motto, flag or other imagery including a flame, torch or medal. Chicago agreed to revise the logo." (thnx, Wikipedia)

Apparently, logos have to incorporate the Olympic rings if the games have been awarded -- hence the London logo's use of them.

let's hear it for the windy city...

london, uhm, hmm... the logo might not be all that, but they've got great curry.

I remember reading somewhere that the Chicago logo was disqualified because A) it didn't include the Olympic rings, and B) the Olympic Committee prohibits altering the image of the torch whatsoever.

But it is a far superior deisgn over the London version, anyway.

I think you're right -- I did hear something about the torch. I don't think Chicago's issued a redesign yet, though.

Whoever designed the London logo must've just awoken from a twenty year coma, suffered just minutes after designing Debbie Gibson's "Electric Youth" album.

LOL @ danup...I kind of like the London logo - even if it is an 80s throwback.

The London logo, when I first saw it, reminded me of a Nazi swastika. Not the best thing to come to mind...

I just see Z-Z, which makes me sleepy (OK, I was sleepy anyway).

The London logo looks like a child's toy where they should click together to build whatever my imagination can come up with. Then some kid will get a piece shoved in his nose and they'll have to be recalled.

i agree that the chicago logo has class and elegance and the london logo has none. and i'm a londoner so you might imagine i feel some sort of loyalty. i don't see that it would be that hard to modify the chicago version to add the rings in somewhere though.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was supposed to be, so I clicked your "more info" link to the Guardian. (A 2012? Really? How exciting.) There's now an article up stating that the promotional video for the new logo has had to be pulled off the air because it has induced seizures.

Yes, I'm having a worse seizure than hearing Mary Hart's voice.

Wow, London logo looks like some japanese cartoonist had at it. Love the PC comic sans font too.

My understanding was that the Chicago logo could not include the torch because the games have yet to be awarded -- but that if Chicago got it, the torch (with rings) would be OK.

Or maybe it should just be a chicago-style dog with the rings being slices of tomato, onion, and a stylized bite mark.

And I thought the ones we had for Sydney 2000 were annoying.
